One of the four value pillars for LMRID is to beautify the neighbourhood. To this end a number of potential guerrilla gardens were identified and were prepared last week for planting by a local landscaper Adam Lethbridge of Pip Projects. While we have received some rain, Adam is waiting for still more before he plants the guerrilla gardens with water-wise indigenous plants wherever possible. It is hoped that residents who have benefitted from these gardens will water them (on water days!) occasionally during dry periods. Adam anticipates that these gardens will be established and begin to bear fruit come spring.
As reported previously some of the leaves collected by Straatwerk on the Rosebank side of LMRID are being used by Oude Molen Eco Village, Arderne Gardens and Ubuhle Bendalo vegetable garden in Khayelitsha. Attached are two photographs of the garden preparation at Oude Molen (Lisa is sowing seeds) and two photographs of the an area at Ubuhle Bendalo being sectioned off for the vegetable garden being established. Many thanks to Lisa Conradie from Arderne Gardens/Oude Molen and local resident Ria Schuurman for running this project.
It is hoped that the leaves on the Little Mowbray side of LMRID will be harvested soon. We are hoping to discuss this with St George’s Grammar School.
